As part of efforts to enhance maritime services in the northern region of the Maldives, a special website dedicated to Northern Maritime Services (UMS) was launched yesterday.. The initiative, led by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), is set to expand the range of maritime services available in the northernmost parts of the country, including international fuel bunkering.
The UMS website, unveiled by Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy, Abdulla Nazim, at a ceremony held at MPL’s head office, serves as a comprehensive platform for information on maritime services offered in the northern region. The site also provides details about agents offering various services, making it easier for international and local maritime operators to access essential resources.
MPL’s expansion into the north includes a broad array of services, such as provision supply, speed boat services, pilotage, water bunkering, crew change, and maintenance services. In partnership with State Trading Organization (STO), which is preparing to launch international fuel bunkering services, MPL aims to create a hub for maritime activities in the region. According to MPL, further expansions of these services are planned for the future.
During the ceremony, MPL CEO Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim emphasized the importance of completing the services to attract sea vessels to the northern region. “We are creating a reason for vessels to come to the Maldives for fuel bunkering or other services,” he stated. The launch of the UMS website is a key step in opening up these services to the international market, particularly in the northernmost part of the country.
STO’s Managing Director, Shimad Ibrahim, also highlighted the potential economic benefits of the international fuel bunkering service. He acknowledged MPL’s significant support in making this service a reality and expressed optimism about the positive impact it could have on the national economy.
