President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that gaining respect on the global stage is essential for achieving national development. In a video message shared on social media to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the Maldives’ membership in the United Nations, President Muizzu stressed the importance of making the country’s voice heard in international forums and becoming a respected state within the global community.
In his address, President Muizzu outlined his primary goal at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA): to present his vision for the future of the Maldives. He underscored the importance of conveying the desires and aspirations of the Maldivian people to the international community, while also highlighting the Maldives’ role at the United Nations and its contributions to global efforts.
“The pathway to national development can be achieved by acquiring respect on the global stage,” Dr. Muizzu stated. He added that his focus during the UNGA is to promote the Maldives’ interests, ensuring that the country continues to play an active role in international diplomacy and takes on greater responsibilities in its journey toward progress.
The President reiterated his commitment to a “Maldives first” foreign policy, reassuring the public that this approach will guide his administration’s international engagements.
President Muizzu is currently in New York, attending the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, marking his first visit to the United Nations and the United States since assuming office in November last year. His schedule includes addressing multiple meetings and events during the UNGA, as well as participating in a special open debate at the UN Security Council.
The President is accompanied by a high-level government delegation during this important visit.
