President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, has embarked on a state visit to India from October 6 to 10, 2024. The visit comes at the official invitation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu and marks the first state visit to India by President Muizzu since he took office in November 2023.

During the trip, President Muizzu is scheduled to meet with several high-ranking officials, including President Murmu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The discussions are expected to center on strengthening bilateral ties between the Maldives and India, focusing on areas of mutual interest, such as economic cooperation, regional security, and shared developmental goals.

This visit follows President Muizzu’s earlier interactions with Indian leaders, including a meeting with Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai in December 2023 and his attendance at Modi’s swearing-in ceremony in June 2024.

In addition to meetings in the Indian capital, President Muizzu is also expected to visit Mumbai and Bengaluru, where he will attend business events aimed at fostering economic collaboration between the two nations.

India has long been a crucial partner for the Maldives, and the relationship between the two nations continues to be a key focus of both governments. India’s “Neighborhood First” policy and the “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) vision highlight the significance India places on its relationship with the Maldives. The state visit is expected to further strengthen these ties, with both sides hoping to expand cooperation across various sectors.

The visit also coincides with recent diplomatic engagements between the two countries, including a recent trip to the Maldives by India’s External Affairs Minister.
