The Maldives has welcomed over 1.6 million tourists as of October 21, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the country’s tourism industry. According to the Ministry of Tourism, a total of 1,603,287 tourists visited the country so far this year, reflecting a 9.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
October alone saw the arrival of 111,260 tourists, a notable 7.7% rise compared to last year’s figures for the same period. This continuous growth in arrivals indicates the steady recovery of the Maldives’ tourism sector following the global disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
China remains the top source market for tourist arrivals, contributing 235,765 visitors so far. Russia follows closely with 176,185 tourists, while the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy round out the top five with 136,081, 120,380, and 111,478 tourists respectively. The report also highlights a significant increase in Indian tourists, with 96,763 visitors recorded so far.
On average, the Maldives now sees 5,435 tourist arrivals per day, keeping the country on track to meet its ambitious target of attracting two million tourists by the end of the year. To achieve this, the Maldives needs an additional 396,713 tourists in the remaining months of 2024.
The government has been collaborating with key industry stakeholders to further promote the Maldives as a top travel destination, leveraging international platforms to showcase the country’s natural beauty and luxury offerings. This proactive approach, coupled with its strategic tourism campaigns, has played a vital role in sustaining the country’s tourism growth.
The Maldives’ tourism industry continues to be a key driver of its economy, and with just under 400,000 more tourists needed to reach the two million mark, the sector is optimistic about ending the year on a high note.
