President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the independence of state institutions, asserting that he has not and will not exert influence over any independent bodies. His statement, shared on social media, comes amid criticism from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) over a proposed bill concerning appointments within key state institutions.
In his message, President Muizzu stated that he has never attempted to sway the decisions or operations of independent institutions or any elected body, underscoring his dedication to an impartial governance approach. He further emphasized his intent to ensure that independent institutions operate with justice, fairness, and equality, pledging that the government would support legal reforms to promote these principles where necessary.
The President’s remarks are a direct response to recent opposition criticism over a legislative proposal that would allow him to appoint the heads of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Elections Commission from among the existing members. The MDP has raised concerns that this move could compromise the autonomy of these bodies.
Despite the controversy, President Muizzu reassured the public of his administration’s commitment to upholding transparency and fair practices within all state institutions, aiming to foster trust and accountability in the Maldives’ governance framework.
