President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has committed to completing and delivering the “Shaheedhunge Hiyaa” housing initiative, which is dedicated to honoring the families of those who sacrificed their lives in the November 3rd, 1988 coup attempt. The pledge came during his address at the Maldivian Victory Day function, held to commemorate the day when the Maldives successfully thwarted the attack on its sovereignty.
In his remarks, President Muizzu reflected on the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and civilians over the past four decades, acknowledging the 29 military personnel, two police officers, and 11 civilians who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Expressing regret over the lack of formal recognition for these fallen heroes, the President described it as a dishonor to their memory and service.
To provide long-term support to the families of the martyrs, the President announced a special lifetime allowance, available under newly formalized regulations. This support will extend to the families of the five soldiers awarded the Medal for Exceptional Bravery on November 3rd, as well as the ten others who received the Medal for Bravery. President Muizzu emphasized that while the state can never fully compensate for the loss endured by the families, this initiative is a symbolic gesture of the nation’s gratitude and respect.
As the “Shaheedhunge Hiyaa” housing project progresses, the government aims to ensure that the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice will have a secure future, in recognition of their loved ones’ courage and dedication.
