Marking one year in office, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu outlined his administration’s key initiatives aimed at advancing regional development, healthcare, and infrastructure during a reception held to commemorate the milestone.
Addressing attendees, the President emphasized the government’s plan to establish seven urban centers across the country. He stated that the centers would be designed to ensure equitable access to high-quality services for all citizens, including those residing on smaller islands. Plans include installing ATMs on every inhabited island and providing fuel at State Trading Organisation (STO) rates across the nation.
The President also announced the expansion of the Rapid Transit Link (RTL) ferry network to all atolls, enhancing inter-island connectivity.
Healthcare Reforms in Focus
A significant portion of the President’s address focused on healthcare reforms. Dr. Muizzu revealed plans for five new hospitals, alongside a specialty facility catering to cancer, thalassemia, and mental health patients. General Practitioner (GP) clinics will also be established to decentralize primary healthcare services, aiming to reduce the need for overseas treatment.
He stated that next year’s budget would prioritize health sector improvements, including infrastructure development, equipment procurement, and personnel training.
Housing and Economic Growth
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the country’s housing challenges through new development projects. He also announced upcoming salary increases for civil servants in 2024 and a planned raise for judiciary employees by 2026.
In aviation, Dr. Muizzu confirmed efforts to establish direct flight routes to China and Europe, with the expansion of Velana International Airport expected to be completed by late next year.
Public Consultation on Regional Development
Dr. Muizzu underlined his intention to seek public input as part of the decision-making process for regional development projects. The proposed urban centers, he noted, would ensure equitable access to essential services, promoting greater unity across the Maldives.
While the President expressed optimism about these initiatives, further details on their implementation timelines and funding strategies remain to be clarified.
The reception concluded with the President reiterating his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by citizens and fostering inclusive national growth. As the government enters its second year, citizens will closely watch how these plans materialize.
