HDC to Resume Development of Hulhumalé Water Theme Park

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced plans to resume the long-delayed development of a water theme park in Hulhumalé.

Speaking at the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed detailed the corporation’s commitment to completing the project. Fazul revealed that the design work for the theme park and an accompanying children’s playground has been assigned to a Sri Lankan firm. He also shared that additional land reclamation for the project is slated to begin next year, with expectations for a timely completion of the advanced theme park.

Initially launched in 2017, the water theme park was envisioned as a USD 35 million venture featuring a range of attractions, including spiral slides, family slides, speed slides, pools, bumper boats, a water roller coaster, and a fountain square. The project also included plans for a 50-room hotel. Despite some initial structural work, much of the development remains incomplete.

The project was originally contracted to Waterfront Hotel and Leisure Company. However, due to significant delays, HDC terminated the agreement, leaving the development on hold until now.

HDC’s renewed efforts reflect its commitment to enhancing recreational facilities in Hulhumalé. Fazul expressed optimism about the project, noting that once completed, it will serve as a major attraction for residents and visitors alike.
