Early this morning, thick plumes of smoke and fierce flames erupted from the Housing Ministry building on Ameenee Magu, prompting a swift emergency response and the evacuation of nearby structures. The blaze, first reported around 7:30 a.m., spread quickly, though its precise origins remain unclear at this time.
Authorities moved to clear the surrounding area, with people in neighboring buildings ushered to safety. In a coordinated effort, an evacuation center has been set up at the Social Center for those affected. Officials are urging anyone needing help to reach out to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) by calling 115 or by heading directly to the evacuation site.
Health concerns have also come to the forefront. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) issued a public health advisory encouraging residents near the smoke-filled area to keep their windows and doors tightly closed. The HPA warns that smoke inhalation poses a higher risk to those with heart conditions or respiratory issues. Symptoms such as difficulty breathing, persistent coughing, or dizziness should be taken seriously, and individuals experiencing these issues are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
On the ground, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu arrived at the scene to personally assess the unfolding situation. The affected building houses not only the Housing Ministry but also the Infrastructure Ministry, the Environment Ministry, and offices of the Malé City Council.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries. Still, the disruption has been felt throughout the neighborhood: a number of schools in the vicinity suspended classes, sending students home early due to concerns about drifting smoke.
As of now, firefighters and authorities remain on-site, working to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Updates from officials are expected as they gain more clarity on the cause of the incident and work to restore normalcy to the area.
