The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that residents of five homes in Malé are being relocated due to severe flood damage caused by torrential rains overnight.
NDMA Chief Executive Hisaan Hassan confirmed that efforts are underway to assist the affected families, whose homes were inundated by floodwaters. In response to the crisis, emergency teams have also deployed sandbags at the entrances of several other houses to prevent further damage from rising waters.
Large sections of Malé are experiencing significant flooding, with the Maafannu ward bearing the brunt of the heavy rainfall. According to statistics from the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office), the capital recorded 136.5 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours—the highest in the country during this period.
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has mobilized teams to address the situation, deploying 16 water pumps across five locations in Malé to drain floodwaters from the streets. These efforts are part of a coordinated response to mitigate the impact of the ongoing downpour.
The MET Office had earlier issued warnings of torrential rain and has urged seafarers to exercise caution, advising them to closely monitor weather updates before setting out. Forecasters predict strong winds and heavy rainfall will persist across the country in the coming days, further heightening concerns about the potential for additional flooding and disruption.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as authorities continue to manage the unfolding situation.
