Top Police Official Relieved of Duties Amid Housing Scheme Controversy

Superintendent of Police Rajunee Shuaib, Head of the Economic Crime Department, has been temporarily relieved of his duties following allegations of unlawfully acquiring a Vinares flat.

Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan confirmed the decision on the social media platform X, stating that Rajunee’s responsibilities have been reassigned to another officer. The move is described as a precautionary measure to preserve the integrity of ongoing investigations into the Binveriyaa and Gedhoruveriyaa housing schemes, both of which have come under scrutiny for alleged irregularities.

Rajunee recently led a press briefing addressing allegations that land plots under the Binveriyaa housing scheme were allocated to individuals not listed as eligible recipients. However, documents circulating on social media have raised questions about his own alleged acquisition of a flat under the Vinares project.

In his statement, Shifan emphasized that the decision to strip Rajunee of his duties does not imply any findings of wrongdoing on his part. “This step was taken to ensure that the investigation proceeds without any perception of bias or undue influence,” Shifan said, adding that the goal is to maintain public trust in the investigation.

The allegations against Rajunee have intensified public interest in the broader housing allocation controversies, particularly those tied to the Binveriyaa and Gedhoruveriyaa schemes. Both programs were launched to address housing shortages but have been clouded by claims of favoritism and irregularities in the allocation processes.

Further updates on the allegations and the findings of the investigations are expected in the coming days.
