The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts, Ibrahim Waheed, has reaffirmed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to addressing the needs and challenges faced by young people living in the nation’s atolls.
Speaking to PSM News during the President’s three-day visit to Huvadhu Atoll, the Minister highlighted the President’s unique approach to governance, noting that it stands apart from that of his predecessors.
“In the past, Presidents only visited the islands during election periods or for ceremonial purposes. In contrast, President Muizzu has made it a priority to visit the islands regularly, listening to the concerns of the people and actively working on solutions,” Ibrahim Waheed said.
The Minister emphasized that one of the key concerns of youth in the atolls is the lack of employment opportunities. Many young people seek ways to find work within their home islands rather than being forced to relocate to urban centers in search of jobs.
“The President is addressing many youth-related challenges, especially by creating opportunities for employment within the atolls. His efforts are focused on empowering local communities and improving access to meaningful work,” he added.
Ibrahim Waheed also underscored the need for improved sports, recreation, and fitness facilities for youth. He noted that many islands have facilities that are either outdated or in disrepair. The Minister assured that the President has prioritized the renovation and re-equipping of these facilities as part of this year’s State budget to promote healthy lifestyles and community engagement.
The President’s visit to Huvadhu Atoll forms part of his broader outreach initiative aimed at fostering closer ties with island communities and ensuring that policies reflect the voices and aspirations of the nation’s youth. The government’s youth-focused development agenda includes projects aimed at creating job opportunities, upgrading recreational spaces, and enhancing public services across the atolls.
