The Parliament of the Maldives is set to hold its first session of the year on February 6, during which President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu will deliver the annual presidential address, the Parliament Secretariat confirmed on Thursday.
According to the Secretariat, preparations for the inaugural session are underway as instructed by Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
As mandated by the Constitution, the President’s annual address at the opening session outlines the state of the nation and presents key proposals and policy goals for the year ahead. President Muizzu’s address is expected to highlight the administration’s development priorities and policy reforms for 2025.
In line with the Parliament’s Rules of Procedure, the minority leader is required to prepare and submit an official response to the presidential address. This response must be presented and debated in Parliament within 14 days following the President’s speech.
In addition to the inaugural session, the Parliament has scheduled two extraordinary sessions this month to address urgent matters, including filling vacancies in two key independent commissions ahead of looming deadlines.
The upcoming session and presidential address are anticipated to set the tone for the year’s legislative agenda and outline the government’s plans to address pressing national issues.
