The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has emerged victorious in 25 out of 37 seats contested during the recent by-elections held across 32 islands. The seats won include key positions such as island council presidents and members of Women’s Development Committees (WDCs).
The by-election results come amid the PNC’s ongoing efforts to expand its membership base and strengthen its political influence. The party launched an extensive membership drive last year, with the goal of becoming the largest political party in the country.
According to the Election Commission’s latest register, PNC’s membership currently stands at over 29,000. However, the party’s chairperson and Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, has stated that the actual number is now nearing 100,000 members.
In a statement made last November, Abdul Raheem emphasized that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had expressed a desire for PNC’s membership to reach 75,000 within the first year of his administration. He added that the party had conducted extensive outreach efforts, with representatives traveling across the country to engage with citizens and bolster support.
Abdul Raheem attributed the surge in membership to the success of President Muizzu’s policies and leadership. “The growing support for PNC reflects public confidence in the President’s vision and the effectiveness of his administration’s policies,” he said.
The by-election victories are seen as a significant boost to PNC’s standing and a testament to the party’s growing influence within local communities. The PNC’s recent gains also signal continued public endorsement of the administration’s development agenda.
As the ruling party continues to expand its reach, political observers note that the PNC’s strengthened position could have a notable impact on upcoming political contests, reinforcing its role as a dominant force in Maldivian politics.
