President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced comprehensive plans to transform Ungoofaaru in Raa Atoll into a modern urban center, highlighting housing, healthcare, education, and infrastructure upgrades. He shared these plans during a meeting with island representatives, including the Ungoofaaru Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee, and local institution heads.
Under the new initiative, 500 housing units will be constructed to accommodate both residents and potential migrants from neighboring islands, reflecting the government’s commitment to delivering quality living spaces. President Muizzu emphasized that this project will commence once the necessary land reclamation and technical groundwork are completed.
Turning to health services, the President pledged to upgrade Ungoofaaru Hospital to tertiary standard over the next three years, ensuring access to high-quality healthcare. This plan aligns with the government’s broader vision of establishing seven urban hubs across the country—each equipped with advanced facilities in healthcare, education, and economic development.
Noting past challenges in land reclamation, President Muizzu acknowledged the ongoing issue of shoreline erosion. To address this, he assured residents that future reclamation projects will incorporate shore protection measures, creating a more resilient coastal environment.
In education, the President discussed efforts to upgrade Ungoofaaru School to a single-session system, pledging additional classrooms and resources. Similarly, he reaffirmed his commitment to developing social and recreational amenities, including a new stadium and sports facilities.
Harbor expansion also featured prominently in the President’s remarks. He confirmed that the harbor pledge would be fulfilled according to residents’ needs, enhancing connectivity and bolstering economic activities. Furthermore, he announced that the national transportation network, Raajje Transport Link (RTL), will be introduced in Raa and Baa Atolls by the end of July, improving regional mobility.
These plans are part of the Maldives’ National Development Masterplan, which aims to foster balanced, long-term growth across the archipelago. Government officials accompanying the President provided additional details on the proposed initiatives, underscoring a collective effort to transform Ungoofaaru into a thriving urban center.
