In a significant boost to the nation’s air transport infrastructure, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu declared today that the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be fully operational before October. The announcement came during his address at the opening of Parliament this morning, where he underscored the government’s commitment to expanding and modernizing Maldives’ aviation network in support of the burgeoning tourism sector.
The President detailed plans to not only upgrade VIA but also complete and open two other major international airports—Hanimaadhoo International Airport and Addu Gan Airport—within the current year. These projects, backed by the Exim Bank of India, are part of a broader strategy to enhance air connectivity across the islands.
“We are working diligently to overcome the long-standing transportation challenges that our people face, and to boost our tourism industry,” President Muizzu said. He emphasized that efficient air transport is vital for an island nation, noting that improved connectivity would facilitate travel between the islands and support economic growth.
In addition to the three international airports, the government is also making strides to improve domestic air travel. The M. Muli Airport is expected to commence operations as early as April, while further enhancements are underway at HDh. Kulhudhuffushi and Sh. Funadhoo airports.
The new VIA terminal, which was initially planned for phased opening with partial operations during last year’s tourism season, will now open in full following recommendations from the Airline Operators Committee. The state-of-the-art terminal is designed to address the space limitations of the existing facility and will feature modern amenities including aero-boarding bridges, advanced baggage handling systems, and expanded retail and F&B outlets, as well as comfortable lounges.
Officials believe that the upgraded terminal will significantly improve the passenger experience and better accommodate the increasing flow of tourists and domestic travelers. With these improvements, the government aims to ensure that the Maldives remains a competitive and attractive destination for international visitors while also meeting the essential transportation needs of its citizens.
As the deadline approaches, stakeholders in the aviation and tourism sectors are eagerly anticipating the launch of the new terminal, which is expected to mark a new chapter in the nation’s ongoing efforts to modernize its infrastructure and boost economic development.
