Male’, Maldives – In a bid to streamline commerce during Ramazan, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade announced new operating hours for retail outlets, cafes, and restaurants during Ramadan and the first seven days of Shawwal, effective February 15.
According to the Ministry’s directive, shops across the country will now open at 5:30 a.m. and remain in operation until 1:00 a.m. throughout both Ramadan and the initial week of Shawwal. Meanwhile, cafes and restaurants will have adjusted timings: during Ramadan, they will open from 5:30 p.m. and close at 3:00 a.m., while for the first seven days of Shawwal, the opening time will shift to 4:30 a.m. with the closing time unchanged at 3:00 a.m.
The Ministry emphasized that these new hours also apply to all 24-hour permitted cafes, restaurants, and takeaway services operating on residential islands. Officials explained that the changes are designed to better meet the unique demands of the Ramadan period, ensuring regulated and consistent business operations that can boost economic activity both during the holy month and in the weeks following.
“As we approach this significant festive season, the government is committed to balancing economic growth with cultural traditions. These revised operating hours will help support businesses while ensuring that consumers can enjoy uninterrupted services,” an official stated.
The announcement reflects the government’s proactive approach to preparing both the public and private sectors for increased activity during Ramadan and Shawwal, underscoring a continued commitment to economic stability and growth during peak seasonal periods.
