President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has shared a powerful message on the occasion of World Day of Social Justice, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to fairness, equality, and environmental sustainability. In his address, the President highlighted the importance of creating a world where social equity is balanced with the need to protect the planet.
This year’s theme, “Strengthening a Just Transition for a Sustainable Future,” resonates deeply with the Maldives, a small island nation grappling with the effects of climate change while striving for economic growth. President Muizzu noted that the theme perfectly aligns with the country’s national priorities and global aspirations, particularly in the face of environmental challenges.
“As we mark the World Day of Social Justice, we are dedicated to promoting fairness, equality, and justice for all,” President Muizzu said in his message. “We must reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where social equity and environmental sustainability are in harmony.”
The President also pointed to the Maldives’ recent membership in the Global Coalition for Social Justice, which the country joined in July 2024. This partnership underscores the Maldives’ commitment to advancing social justice through collective action, strengthening societal resilience, and fostering dialogue for shared prosperity.
Locally, the Maldives is making significant strides in transforming its economy and development trajectory. President Muizzu emphasized that the government is focused on ensuring that economic growth does not come at the expense of the environment, particularly as the country is especially vulnerable to climate change. The ongoing development of Ras Malé, along with other urban centers, is a key component of this transformation. Ras Malé, designated as a pioneering Eco-City, will serve as a model for sustainability while addressing urgent housing needs and promoting economic prosperity.
In line with the country’s ambition for a low-carbon economy, President Muizzu outlined plans to increase renewable energy sources to 33% by 2028, as well as efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. These steps are part of a broader initiative, including the Energy Roadmap 2024-2033, which aims to ensure energy security while promoting environmental sustainability.
The government is also committed to ensuring that gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) are woven into every aspect of the country’s development. President Muizzu highlighted the need for coherent policies that drive change across economic, environmental, social, educational, and labor sectors. He emphasized the importance of empowering marginalized groups, including women, persons with disabilities, youth, and the elderly, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.
Central to this vision is the creation of a robust social protection system to shield communities from economic and environmental shocks. The government is also focused on implementing community-driven, participatory governance that incorporates both modern technologies and traditional knowledge, ensuring that future solutions are both inclusive and sustainable.
“The realization of a just future requires collective action,” President Muizzu concluded. “We must draw strength from our past and work together for a brighter tomorrow.”
In addition to his official statement, the President shared his message on his official ‘X’ account, further underscoring his commitment to social justice and sustainability in the Maldives and beyond.
