The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a series of social media threats made against Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullah Khaleel. The threats, which were posted on the platform X, were allegedly made by a Sri Lankan man identified as Nadeesh Perera. Authorities are working closely with relevant agencies to investigate the matter.
The threatening posts were made after an incident in Sri Lanka, where a gang leader was shot by a man disguised as a lawyer in a courthouse. Perera, in his posts, tagged Minister Khaleel, warning him in a series of disturbing statements. One post read, “In Sri Lanka, death can come in the form of a disguised lawyer in the court house! So be careful when you are at the hotel room, death can come to you in the form of a room boy or waiter.”
In another post, Perera appeared to reference a potential car crash involving Minister Khaleel, stating, “Will @abkhaleel’s car crash in Colombo, and the cause of death be inhalation of carbon monoxide emitted from the fire? Driver should drive with care…”
A further post ominously warned the Minister to ensure that his hotel room was “clean and safe,” suggesting, “Otherwise, you might die of pesticide poisoning.”
Perera, who has a Maldivian child, expressed frustration over his alleged denial of access to the child and directed several posts toward the Maldives’ Immigration Controller. His posts seemed to focus on the safety of Minister Khaleel while in Sri Lanka, implying potential harm disguised as an accident or hotel staff.
The Maldives Police Service has treated the threats as serious and is collaborating with Sri Lankan authorities to ensure the safety of Minister Khaleel and to track down the individual behind the alarming messages. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to ensure that justice is served in this troubling case.
