In a renewed effort to tackle the ongoing housing crisis in the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that his administration will prioritize the construction of homes on private lands. This move is part of a nationwide housing initiative aimed at addressing the urgent need for affordable housing across the country. The announcement was made during the President’s visit to Meedhoo, Dhaalu Atoll, as part of a three-day tour of the region.
During his visit, President Muizzu engaged with the local council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of Meedhoo, where he highlighted key infrastructure projects underway and discussed the government’s ongoing efforts to address the island’s most pressing needs. One of the standout announcements during his speech was the confirmation that 200 new housing units will be constructed in Meedhoo, with an emphasis on utilizing private lands for these developments.
The President explained that the housing initiative will involve constructing three-room apartments, which can be adapted into three-room houses on private lands upon request from residents. The project will prioritize building homes on privately owned land, with the remaining units to be developed on a designated area.
President Muizzu reiterated that resolving the housing issue remains one of the top priorities of his administration. “Housing is a fundamental issue for our people, and it is essential that we address this challenge,” he said, emphasizing the importance of making homeownership more accessible for Maldivian families.
As part of his campaign pledge to provide better housing, President Muizzu had promised to build over 12,000 housing units across the country. The government is currently in the process of seeking contractors to help fulfill this ambitious target. Recently, announcements have been made to find contractors for housing projects on 57 different islands.
The President also urged island residents who wish to build homes on private lands to inform the government of their needs before the end of Ramadan. This proactive call for engagement aims to streamline the allocation process and ensure that the government can better plan and accommodate local housing requirements.
The initiative marks a significant shift towards prioritizing private land development, allowing more Maldivians to benefit from homeownership while alleviating the pressure on government-managed housing programs. The announcement reflects President Muizzu’s commitment to addressing the housing shortage and ensuring that the people of the Maldives can enjoy secure, affordable living conditions.
With the government’s focus on private land housing projects, it is expected that this nationwide initiative will not only help ease the housing crisis but also contribute to the long-term economic and social development of the country.
