President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on the people of the Maldives to extend the positive changes brought by Ramadan into their daily lives, beyond the holy month. In his annual message marking the beginning of Ramadan, the President expressed his best wishes to the people and emphasized the lasting impact that the holy month can have on personal behavior and relationships.
Speaking to the nation, President Muizzu highlighted the spiritual significance of Ramadan, emphasizing that it is the month in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed and the blessed night of Laylat al-Qadr occurs. He said that fasting, worship, and acts of kindness during this month nourish not only the body but also the soul. He encouraged the citizens to use this month as an opportunity to improve their character and strengthen their relationships with family, neighbors, and the wider community.
Describing Ramadan as a “cherished guest” that visits once a year, the President urged the public to sustain the transformative benefits of Ramadan throughout the year. He encouraged people to set good examples for children and youth, fostering virtuous behavior that extends beyond the fasting period. He also noted that Ramadan presents an opportunity to take the first step toward abandoning self-harming habits, such as smoking, citing the discipline of fasting as a model for self-control.
“Let us renew our resolve this month to avoid those who attempt to spread lies and create unrest. Let us choose to live prosperous lives and do good deeds that will benefit us in this world and the hereafter,” President Muizzu said. He emphasized the importance of avoiding wastefulness, particularly in terms of time, and urged the public to adopt these principles for a more meaningful and productive life.
The President also stressed the importance of strengthening family bonds, respecting neighbors, and fulfilling the rights of those around us. He reiterated that the success of the people is deeply linked to the teachings of Islam, reminding the public to be grateful for the blessings, peace, and mercy that the Lord has bestowed upon the country. Furthermore, he encouraged Maldivians to remember in their prayers the Muslims facing hardship and suffering around the world.
In his message, the President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the lives of citizens by accelerating efforts to ensure affordable housing for all. He emphasized that the government remains focused on alleviating hardships, addressing basic needs, and fostering happiness among the people.
The President also reflected on the rich history of Islam in the Maldives, noting that Ramadan has held a special place in the hearts of the people since the country’s conversion to Islam 898 years ago. He expressed his gratitude for the nation’s culture and heritage, which is enriched by the compassion and generosity exhibited during Ramadan.
Concluding his address, President Muizzu assured the public that the government will continue to introduce initiatives each Ramadan that bring comfort and ease to the people, further setting examples of kindness and generosity for the entire nation.
