WAMCO Urges Cooperation Amid Rainy Weather to Maintain Clean Streets

The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has called on the public to avoid disposing of waste on roads and public spaces due to the challenges posed by heavy rain and weather conditions, which may affect waste collection and sanitation efforts.

In an advisory issued today, WAMCO highlighted the difficulties the inclement weather creates in maintaining cleanliness across the city, especially as rainfall can cause waste accumulation and disrupt regular collection schedules. The corporation emphasized that while there may be some delays, waste collection will continue as planned.

“Despite the weather conditions, our waste collection services will run as scheduled. However, we kindly ask the public to refrain from leaving trash on the streets. If garbage is not collected within the usual timeframe, please contact our hotline at 1666 for assistance,” a WAMCO representative said.

The advisory comes amid preparations for Ramadan, during which waste management is expected to face higher demand. To accommodate the increased volume of waste during the fasting month, WAMCO has adjusted its collection schedules to ensure timely and efficient disposal.

For residents of Malé, waste collection will now take place from 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. In Hulhumalé, services will be available from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., and in Villimalé, the collection window will be from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The company urges residents to follow these adjusted timings to ensure their waste is disposed of properly.

Additionally, WAMCO reminded the public to handle sharp objects, such as glass, with care by securely wrapping and separating them before disposal. This measure is particularly important to ensure the safety of waste collection workers.

As the weather continues to pose challenges, WAMCO reiterated its commitment to maintaining cleanliness in the Greater Malé region and called for continued public cooperation to manage waste effectively throughout the ongoing rainy season and the Ramadan period.
