President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has issued a directive standardizing the official Dhivehi and English names for inhabited islands, atolls, and administrative codes, ensuring uniformity across all government records and official communications.
The decision, announced on Thursday, mandates that all official documents, publications, information management systems, databases, websites, and social media platforms adhere to the specified names outlined in the presidential decree for ‘Establishing Inhabited Islands in the Maldives’.
As a result of this move, the 2010 presidential decree on the establishment of inhabited islands, along with all its subsequent amendments, has been repealed.
The standardization is expected to streamline administrative processes, eliminate inconsistencies in official records, and enhance clarity in government communications. The government has yet to release further details regarding the revised naming structure and its implications for official institutions and local administrations.
