Unattended Vessels Face Fines: Transport Ministry Enforces Onboard Crew Requirement

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has issued a directive requiring all vessels anchored in harbours to maintain an adequate number of crew members on board at all times, citing safety concerns.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Ministry revealed it had received multiple reports of vessels left unattended while moored, leading to hazardous situations and property damage. Some boats, according to the Ministry, were found anchored both at sea and within harbours without any crew present — a situation deemed dangerous for nearby vessels and harbour infrastructure.

The Ministry emphasized that the presence of crew is essential for proper vessel monitoring and to prevent potential incidents, especially during adverse weather conditions or emergencies.

To enforce compliance, the Ministry warned that owners of vessels found moored without crew will be fined MVR 1,000 under the Safety of Vessels in the Sea of Maldives Regulations.

The move aims to bolster harbour safety and ensure responsible vessel management, as authorities continue efforts to enhance maritime oversight in the Maldives.
