Managing Director of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), Hussain Fahmy, has strongly denied allegations circulating on social media suggesting he purchased a luxury apartment after assuming office. Fahmy called the claims false and politically motivated, asserting they were designed to tarnish his reputation.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X on Sunday night, Fahmy addressed the rumour that he had acquired an MVR 8.5 million apartment after his appointment. He clarified that the property was, in fact, purchased years ago during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and that he has been making payments on it ever since.
“These are politically fabricated lies intended to damage my reputation,” Fahmy wrote. “This apartment was bought long before I assumed my current role.”
While noting that he welcomes constructive criticism of his work at STELCO, Fahmy urged the public and political actors to refrain from spreading unfounded claims. He emphasised the importance of distinguishing between political critique and personal attacks, especially when the latter are based on misinformation.
The STELCO chief’s response comes amid a rise in politically charged rhetoric online, as senior public officials continue to face scrutiny over alleged misconduct. Fahmy reiterated his commitment to transparency and invited accountability—so long as it is grounded in truth.
