Maldives Donates MVR 500,000 from Zakat al-Fitr Fund to Support Children in Gaza

The Maldives has contributed MVR 500,000 from this year’s Zakat al-Fitr fund to aid children in Gaza, reaffirming the country’s longstanding support for Palestine.

The donation was officially handed over to the Isra Association, a Maldivian NGO actively engaged in Palestinian advocacy and humanitarian aid efforts. Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs, Ali Ahsan, confirmed that the funds were transferred on Sunday, fulfilling a commitment previously announced by Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, earlier this Ramadan.

The Isra Association has been at the forefront of raising awareness and mobilizing support for Palestine through various fundraising and advocacy initiatives. The latest contribution reflects the growing solidarity among Maldivians for the plight of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, where humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate.

This year’s Zakat al-Fitr collection saw a record-high contribution, with the Ministry of Islamic Affairs reporting a total collection of MVR 13.2 million. Of this, MVR 12.4 million was disbursed, benefiting 2,765 individuals listed in the national registry of low-income families and orphans. Each beneficiary received MVR 4,500, marking a notable increase compared to previous years. Additionally, those registered in the Greater Malé area were provided with 15 kilograms of grains.

The Maldives has consistently voiced strong support for Palestine, with both the government and civil society actively participating in humanitarian initiatives. The latest donation underscores the country’s commitment to standing with the Palestinian people, particularly in times of crisis.
