President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives National Defence Force’s (MNDF) vital role in defending the nation’s sovereignty, pledging that the force will continue to adapt to changing global dynamics while upholding its duty to protect the Maldivian people and the state’s independence.
In a message marking the 133rd anniversary of the MNDF on Sunday, President Muizzu paid tribute to the dedication and sacrifices of military personnel throughout the country’s history. He stressed that the enduring peace, unity, and independence of the Maldives are a direct result of the loyalty and service of those who have guarded the nation across generations.
“The unwavering commitment of our military, their willingness to place national duty above personal interest, and their resolve in times of crisis have been instrumental in preserving our sovereignty,” the President said.
President Muizzu acknowledged the challenges brought about by ongoing global and regional shifts, but said the MNDF’s readiness and professionalism position it well to respond effectively to emerging threats. He underlined that the defence force would remain firmly committed to safeguarding the country’s honour and stability amid these evolving geopolitical currents.
Reiterating the government’s faith in the MNDF, the President expressed confidence that the nation’s independence would remain intact so long as the force’s spirit of sacrifice and loyalty continues.
In a separate post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, President Muizzu further emphasized that the foundation of the Maldives’ national progress lies in its independence. He credited the MNDF’s tireless efforts and sacrifice for enabling Maldivians to pursue success in peace and freedom.
As the country commemorates over a century of organised military service—dating back to the establishment of the armed forces on April 21, 1892—the President’s remarks serve as a reminder of the enduring role the MNDF plays in shaping and safeguarding the nation’s identity and future.
