In a continued effort to ease financial burdens on households, the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced that electricity bill discounts have been applied for both March and April.
The initiative follows a directive by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who earlier pledged relief for consumers during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. While the initial discount applied to March bills, STELCO later extended the relief into April, citing record-high temperatures as the reason for the continued support.
According to STELCO, although electricity consumption varied between the two months, the discounts ensured that bills remained consistent, helping families manage the cost of increased usage — especially driven by high demand for cooling appliances during the heatwave.
The government had previously confirmed that it allocated MVR 160 million to subsidize March utility bills for electricity and water as part of broader efforts to address the impact of the extreme weather.
The gesture has been widely welcomed by the public, especially amid rising concerns over climate-related pressures and the cost of living.
STELCO has urged customers to continue monitoring their energy usage and assured that the company remains committed to working alongside government efforts to provide support during periods of environmental stress.
