President Muizzu Reaffirms Hajj as Top National Priority, Celebrates Inclusion in Makkah Route Initiative

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged unwavering government support to ensure a seamless and spiritually fulfilling Hajj experience for Maldivian pilgrims, declaring the pilgrimage a top national priority during a special address in Makkah.

Meeting with this year’s Maldivian pilgrims currently in the holy city, President Muizzu described 2025 as a landmark year for Hajj in the Maldives. He highlighted the country’s historic inclusion in Saudi Arabia’s Makkah Route Initiative — a programme that simplifies and accelerates pre-departure and arrival procedures for pilgrims — as a major achievement in enhancing the travel experience.

“This is a significant moment for our nation. Our inclusion in the Makkah Route Initiative, through the generous support of the Saudi leadership, reflects the strength of our bilateral ties and our shared commitment to facilitating this sacred journey,” President Muizzu said, extending heartfelt gratitude to King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He acknowledged the challenges previously faced by Maldivian pilgrims — including long wait times and logistical bottlenecks — and assured that his administration has addressed nearly all such issues. The President emphasised that his government would continue to prioritise the wellbeing and comfort of pilgrims throughout every phase of the pilgrimage, from departure to return.

“This year marks a turning point. We are committed to offering pilgrims the dignity, care, and efficiency they deserve — beginning at home and continuing until they step back onto Maldivian soil,” he said.

Under the Makkah Route Initiative, Maldivian pilgrims benefit from streamlined procedures including pre-clearance for immigration, baggage handling, and health checks conducted in Malé, allowing for swift transit upon arrival in Saudi Arabia.

The President’s visit and remarks reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to deepen ties with Saudi Arabia and improve religious services for Maldivians abroad, particularly during the sacred Hajj season.
