MTCC Marks Strong Year with Completion of 26 Nationwide Infrastructure Projects in 2024

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) capped off 2024 with a notable performance, completing 26 key infrastructure projects across the country, according to the company’s latest annual report.

The state-owned firm reported that by the end of last year, it had 189 ongoing projects, with the 26 completions spanning a wide range of sectors including land reclamation, shore protection, harbor development, airport expansion, road construction, and community infrastructure.

Among the highlights of 2024 were six land reclamation and shore protection projects, carried out in Maafaru (Noonu Atoll), Ethere Madivaru (Alifu Alifu Atoll), Innamaadhoo (Raa Atoll), Vilufushi (Thaa Atoll), and the northwest zones of both Velana International Airport and Hoarafushi Airport. These projects are seen as critical in strengthening island resilience and supporting economic development in outlying atolls.

MTCC also completed harbor development in eight islands, including Kanduoih-giri and Villimalé in Kaafu Atoll, Maalhos in Alifu Alifu Atoll, Muli in Meemu Atoll, Baarah in Haa Alifu Atoll, Kumundhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Kamadhoo in Baa Atoll, and Hulhumalé Harbour 1.

One of the company’s major achievements was the completion of the second phase of the Maafaru International Airport development, an effort aligned with the government’s broader goals of expanding air travel infrastructure in the north of the country.

Road development also featured prominently in MTCC’s portfolio last year. Projects completed include road construction in Hoarafushi (Haa Alifu Atoll), Fuvahmulah City, and asphalt paving at Velana International Airport, improving connectivity and access in both urban and transport hubs.

Community-level construction efforts included the renovation of the Thoddoo Islamic Centre and groundwork for football fields in Funadhoo (Shaviyani Atoll) and Fuvahmulah’s Dhandimagu district, highlighting the company’s contributions to social infrastructure.

In addition to physical construction, MTCC provided survey and consultancy services for major airport projects such as the Nilandhoo Airport reclamation, Guraidhoo Airport, and service improvements at the Velana International Airport cargo terminal.

The report also highlights MTCC’s strategic push to enhance its operational capabilities. Notably, the company commissioned a new dredging vessel, Bodu Jarraafa 2, increasing its daily dredging capacity by 29 percent. It also introduced quality assurance protocols across work sites and restructured internal teams to improve project efficiency.

With a growing portfolio and presence across the Maldives, MTCC continues to position itself as a critical national partner in infrastructure development. The company’s 2024 performance underscores its role in delivering essential services and building a more connected, resilient island nation.
