President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that a majority of the development projects promised to the island of Landhoo during his presidential campaign will commence within this year. Speaking during a community visit to the northern Noonu Atoll island on Sunday, the president highlighted ongoing preparations and affirmed his administration’s resolve to transform electoral commitments into tangible outcomes.
Landhoo was the fifth stop on President Muizzu’s 13-island tour of Noonu Atoll, which spans from July 21 to 24. The tour aims to strengthen government engagement with local communities and accelerate infrastructure development in the region.
Development Momentum Underway
Addressing residents at a public gathering, President Muizzu outlined key initiatives already in motion. These include the upgrade of Landhoo’s health centre to 24-hour service, the construction of a fitness and recreation centre, and long-term erosion mitigation efforts. He also assured residents that projects such as a designated swimming area and a handball court will be incorporated into the government’s upcoming infrastructure rollout.
“Even if specific contractors have not yet been assigned, the work is progressing in phases,” the president explained. “We anticipate signing agreements for the next phase by September, with on-site work beginning in November.”
Strengthening Education and Economy
The president also announced that progress is underway on Landhoo’s new school building, with future expansion and staff accommodation enhancements planned to support a stronger academic environment. He added that an ice plant project—critical for local fishermen—has secured foreign funding and will be completed before the end of the year.
Further, President Muizzu noted that equipment for a new water supply system has already been delivered, allowing the project to proceed without delay.
Community Voices Concerns
During a consultative session with Landhoo’s Island Council, Women’s Development Committee, and institutional leaders, several pressing concerns were raised. These included delays in classroom construction, stalled sports facilities, and calls for coastal protection, a police station, and a dedicated boat launching area.
The president responded by directing relevant ministers and SOE heads to provide real-time updates on these projects, while pledging a thorough review of all concerns.
Fitness Centre Foundation Laid
A key highlight of the Landhoo visit was the groundbreaking ceremony for the island’s new fitness and recreation centre. President Muizzu laid the foundation stone alongside Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu. The project, commissioned to Fenaka Corporation, is expected to be completed within the year and will provide residents with expanded access to structured physical activities and wellness facilities.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to establish fitness centres across all inhabited islands by the end of 2026. The president reiterated this commitment during earlier stops in Ken’dhikulhudhoo and Kudafari, where he highlighted upcoming renovations of futsal courts and the rollout of new recreational infrastructure.
Warm Welcome for the Presidential Delegation
President Muizzu received a warm welcome upon his arrival in Landhoo, with residents lining the harbour to greet him and his delegation. As the president continues his tour of Noonu Atoll—covering Maafaru, Hen’badhoo, Holhudhoo, Lhohi, Kudafari, Ken’dhikulhudhoo, Velidhoo, Manadhoo, Magoodhoo, Maalhendhoo, Miladhoo, and Fodhdhoo—the administration’s focus remains firmly on delivering results, addressing community needs, and driving regional development.
