In a message shared via social media, President Muizzu paid tribute to the significance of the day and offered his heartfelt congratulations to all Maldivians.

“I wish to extend my most sincere greetings and heartfelt best wishes to the beloved citizens on this proud Independence Day of the Maldivian people,” the president wrote. Concluding his message with a prayer, he added, “May this beloved nation forever remain in independence and prosperity. Amen.”

Public Celebrations Reflect National Spirit

Following the morning ceremony, a full programme of cultural performances, school presentations, parades, and community sports activities were scheduled throughout the day, particularly in Malé’s Republic Square and surrounding areas. Citizens of all ages took part in the festivities, which aimed to honor national unity and encourage civic pride.

The Independence Day holiday, observed annually on July 26, commemorates the Maldives’ emergence as a fully sovereign nation in 1965, when the country officially ended its status as a British protectorate. Each year, the occasion provides an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s journey, as well as a celebration of its cultural identity, resilience, and aspirations for the future.

This year’s 60th anniversary holds special resonance, marking six decades of independence and self-determination in the island nation’s modern history.
