The government has signed agreements to develop new waste management centres in Vaavu Atoll, marking a significant step towards improving environmental services in the region.
Contracts were officially awarded to Wee Hour Investment Pvt Ltd for the establishment of centres on Thinadhoo and Fulidhoo islands. The agreements were signed on Wednesday by Deputy Minister of Tourism and Environment Ahmed Nizam, while senior representatives signed on behalf of the company.
According to the Environment Ministry, some of the necessary equipment for the facilities has already been handed over to island councils. Thinadhoo and Felidhoo councils have each received machinery such as can-pressing units and wood chippers, which will support the upcoming operations.
The projects are valued at USD 194,553 and are required to be completed within 120 days. Officials noted that the initiative reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen sustainable waste management practices across the Maldives, particularly in smaller island communities where resources remain limited.
Once operational, the centres are expected to reduce the environmental burden on the islands and provide more effective waste processing solutions for residents.
