Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) is gearing up to begin seaplane counter services at Velana International Airport’s (VIA) newly opened Terminal 1, marking a significant enhancement in passenger convenience and airport operations.
Terminal 1, inaugurated on 26 July last year, includes 24 dedicated check-in counters for seaplane operations. While MACL has not yet announced an official opening date for the counters, the company confirmed that preparations are in their final stages. Seaplane operators were recently taken through familiarisation sessions to ensure a smooth transition once services go live.
As part of the operational rollout, MACL has finalised passenger transport routes from Terminal 1 to the seaplane terminal. Dedicated buses will be used to shuttle passengers after check-in, providing a structured and efficient movement system between facilities.
The company has also introduced new parking management measures to support the expansion. Parking zones located south of Arrival Gate 4 have now been reserved exclusively for seaplane operators and MACL staff buses. MACL has advised that all other vehicles are strictly prohibited from entering or parking in the restricted area, urging the public to adhere to instructions issued by airport estate security personnel.
The Maldives operates the largest seaplane fleet in the world, a vital component of the nation’s tourism infrastructure. MACL says the upcoming expansion will enhance convenience for travellers and streamline operations for operators at a time of growing demand.
The introduction of seaplane check-in services at Terminal 1 marks another major step in VIA’s broader expansion plan, aimed at improving passenger experience and supporting the continued growth of the Maldives’ aviation and tourism sectors.
