The Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced its active participation in the 56th session of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which is currently underway and scheduled to run until July 12.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed that the Maldives will fully engage in the meetings and sessions of the UNHCR, highlighting its commitment to advancing human rights enforcement. The Maldives delegation will contribute by presenting statements on its ongoing efforts in this field.
Specifically, the Maldives will join the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) meeting during the session to address the challenges posed by climate change and to seek technical assistance in this regard. Discussions will also focus on strategies to enhance women’s participation in international forums and ensure equal opportunities for representation at the global level.
Furthermore, the Maldives will participate in the Co-Group meeting aimed at fostering environments where judges and lawyers can operate independently and effectively.
Leading the Maldives delegation at these sessions is Dr. Salma Rasheed, Ambassador of the Maldives to the United Nations in Geneva, accompanied by a delegation comprising esteemed dignitaries.
The participation underscores the Maldives’ proactive stance on global human rights issues and its commitment to addressing climate change impacts and gender equality on the international stage.
