Japanese Government Gifts Fleet of Vehicles to Enhance Maldives Police Operations

In a gesture of international cooperation, the Japanese government has donated a fleet of vehicles to the Maldives Police Service, aimed at enhancing the country’s law enforcement capabilities. The handover ceremony marked a milestone in bilateral relations as Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued support.

Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner Shujau highlighted the importance of bolstering police resources amidst rising crime rates. “As crime continues to pose challenges in our society, it is crucial to augment our operational capacity,” he emphasized. The donation of 54 police cars and four Toyota vans, valued at US$4 million (approximately MVR 61.7 million), is poised to significantly bolster the police’s ability to maintain security and order across the Maldives.

“These vehicles will greatly enhance our ability to conduct operations effectively,” Commissioner Shuja’ remarked, underscoring the critical role of modern equipment in law enforcement. He extended gratitude to the Japanese government for its generous contribution, emphasizing the vehicles’ immediate impact on enhancing police responsiveness and professionalism.

Japanese Ambassador to Maldives Takeuchi Midori echoed Commissioner Shuja’s sentiments, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to supporting the Maldives’ law enforcement efforts. “Today’s donation is part of a larger initiative worth over 650 million Japanese yen, aimed at providing essential equipment and vehicles to enhance operational capabilities,” Ambassador Midori stated.

Ambassador Midori emphasized the evolving security challenges faced by both nations and stressed Japan’s ongoing support through comprehensive assistance programs. “This contribution underscores Japan’s dedication to fostering a safe and secure environment in the Maldives,” She added.

The donation ceremony symbolized a deepening partnership between Japan and the Maldives, reflecting a history of collaboration in various sectors, including security and disaster prevention. Ambassador Midori highlighted Japan’s previous contributions, dating back to 2017, and expressed optimism for future collaborations in areas of mutual interest.

The event concluded with expressions of gratitude and renewed commitments to strengthen bilateral ties. Commissioner Shuja’ extended heartfelt thanks to Japan for its unwavering support, while Ambassador Midori reiterated Japan’s readiness to continue assisting the Maldives in achieving its security objectives.
