In today’s by-elections for vacant seats on the Male’ City Council, candidates from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) have emerged victorious in all three constituencies.
The by-elections were conducted to fill the seats for Henveyru Hulhangu, Mahchangolhi Medhu, and Hulhumale constituencies, left vacant after former councilors were elected to parliamentary positions.
The successful candidates in today’s election are as follows:
- Fathimath Shaufa Saleem for Henveyru Hulhangu
- Fathimath Ishan Ali for Mahchangolhi Medhu
- Ali Aiman for Hulhumale
The Henveyru Hulhangu seat became vacant following the election of former councilor Ahmed Aifan to parliament. Similarly, the Mahchangolhi Medhu seat was left empty after Ahmed Zameer, a former councilor, secured a parliamentary position. Additionally, the Hulhumale constituency seat was vacated when incumbent councilor Ibrahim Suja won a parliamentary seat representing Baarashu constituency.
Today’s results mark a strong showing for the PNC, which has won 5 out of 6 by-elections held today.
Despite more than 13,000 eligible voters across the six constituencies, the voter turnout was notably low. According to the Elections Commission, only 3,528 individuals cast their votes, representing a turnout of 26.91 percent.
The Elections Commission expressed concern over the low voter participation and emphasized the importance of civic engagement in local governance.
