Maldives and China Hold Talks to Enhance Bilateral Relations

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Moosa Zameer, held extensive bilateral discussions yesterday with Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.

Minister Zameer, warmly welcomed to Beijing by Minister Wang, conveyed greetings from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and presented two letters addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

During the talks, Minister Zameer reiterated Maldives’ adherence to the One-China Principle and the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership established during President Dr. Muizzu’s recent State Visit to China. The discussions encompassed a wide range of topics crucial for enhancing bilateral relations.

Minister Zameer emphasized the significant milestone of over 50 years of cooperation between the Maldives and China, highlighting the mutual desire to further elevate bilateral ties. He expressed gratitude for China’s support through initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has contributed significantly to the Maldives’ socio-economic development. Notable projects mentioned included the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, Velana International Airport expansion, and various social housing initiatives.

Additionally, Minister Zameer briefed his Chinese counterpart on the current economic and fiscal landscape in the Maldives, stressing the importance of implementing fiscal reforms outlined by President Dr. Muizzu. He sought China’s continued support in executing these reforms to bolster confidence among consumers and investors in the Maldivian economy.

Accompanying Minister Zameer were Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq, Minister of Finance, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, Ambassador-Designate, senior officials of the Government of Maldives, and the Maldives Embassy in China.

Following the discussions, Minister Wang Yi hosted a reception in honor of Minister Zameer and the Maldivian delegation.
