Maldivian Airlines to Expand Fleet with New Airbus A330

Maldivian Airlines has announced a major fleet expansion with the addition of an Airbus A330-200, following the signing of a new agreement with aircraft leasing company TrueNoord.

The agreement, finalized yesterday, was marked by a signing ceremony attended by key representatives from both parties. TrueNoord, known for its global aircraft leasing operations, will provide the Airbus A330 to Maldivian Airlines, enhancing its ability to serve a broader range of destinations and improve passenger experiences.

The deal was signed by Ibrahim Iyaz, Managing Director of Island Aviation, on behalf of Maldivian Airlines, and Cast Lindboom, Chief Commercial Officer of TrueNoord. Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen was also present in the signing ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ameen highlighted the anticipated positive impact of the wide-body Airbus A330, noting that it will not only attract more tourists to the Maldives but also bring substantial financial benefits to the nation. “The introduction of this aircraft will be transformative for our tourism industry and our economy,” Minister Ameen said.

Island Aviation MD Ibrahim Iyaz explained that the decision to acquire the wide-body aircraft was made by the Cabinet in December of last year. “This move allows our national airline to compete more effectively on the international stage,” Iyaz noted.

The new Airbus A330 is expected to begin operations later this year, with initial flights planned to China. Future routes will include destinations in Europe and South Africa. This expansion is part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s 100-day pledge to enhance the capabilities of the national airline.

Currently, Maldivian Airlines serves 16 domestic airports and three international destinations. The addition of the A330 is set to significantly broaden its operational scope and improve service quality, supporting the Maldives’ growing tourism industry.
