President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has outlined plans to commence the construction of two key bridges in 2026, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Thilafushi, Giraavaru, and Uthuru Thilafalhu. The announcement was made during his speech on government economic policies at the Independence Day ceremony held last night.
In his address, President Muizzu highlighted recent discussions between Government Ministers and the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) during a visit to China. The discussions focused on securing funding for the ambitious bridge project.
“Our goal is to initiate the practical construction of these two bridges in 2026, with the bridge connecting to Uthuru Thilafalhu expected to be completed by the end of 2029,” President Muizzu stated.
The bridge to Uthuru Thilafalhu is part of a broader initiative to develop an Agricultural Economic Zone, which aims to boost the national economy and enhance food security. In preparation for this, dredging work in Uthuru Thilafalhu is slated to begin this year.
Additionally, President Muizzu mentioned that some of the land in Uthuru Thilafalhu would be allocated for other purposes, necessitating dredging and the construction of the bridge to support these developments.
The dredging operations for Uthuru Thilafalhu are being managed by China Harbor Engineering Company, which has been awarded the contract to both dredge the area and develop the agricultural zone.
This infrastructure project is expected to play a crucial role in the Maldives’ economic growth and development, reinforcing the country’s commitment to enhancing its transport network and economic resilience.
