President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has strongly condemned a recent Israeli airstrike that targeted a school in Gaza, resulting in a significant loss of life. In a tweet posted earlier today, President Muizzu expressed his outrage over the attack, which took place at Al-Taba’een School in Gaza City. The school, which was sheltering displaced Palestinian families, was hit during dawn prayers, causing widespread devastation.
“I strongly condemn the Israeli targeting of yet another school in Gaza,” President Muizzu tweeted. “Horrifying images show martyred and injured women, children, and the elderly, who were seeking refuge in Al-Taba’een School. Over 39,000 innocent Palestinians have been killed since the war began in October, with Israel showing no effort toward a ceasefire. This is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. The international community must act immediately to hold Israel accountable and protect civilians.”
The attack on Al-Taba’een School, which housed more than 1,000 people, is one of the deadliest incidents in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. According to the Gaza Civil Emergency Service, around 100 people were killed in the airstrike. Fadl Naeem, head of Al-Ahli Hospital, where many of the casualties were taken, reported that the victims included women, children, and the elderly. He added that the remains of many others were so badly disfigured that identification was challenging.
The Israeli military has targeted several shelters in Gaza over the past few weeks. The United Nations reported that 477 out of 564 school buildings in Gaza had been directly hit or damaged as of July 6, with more than a dozen attacks on schools occurring since then. The strike on Al-Taba’een School is the latest in a series of attacks that have drawn international condemnation.
Al-Taba’een School, which also served as a mosque, had recently taken in dozens of displaced people from the town of Beit Hanoun after the Israeli army ordered them to leave their homes. Witnesses reported that the airstrike occurred during dawn prayers, catching many of the shelter’s occupants off guard.
President Muizzu’s statement echoes growing international concern over the escalating violence in Gaza. As the death toll continues to rise, he called for immediate action from the global community to hold Israel accountable and to protect civilians trapped in the conflict.
