Malé City has experienced a significant downpour, recording 89.4mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, according to the Maldives Meteorology Office (Met Office). This marks the highest rainfall recorded across the Maldives during this period.
The heavy rains, which began on Tuesday and continued through to Wednesday morning, caused widespread flooding in Malé and several other islands. The island of Thoddoo in Alif Atoll registered the second-highest rainfall with 70.6mm.
The Met Office has issued a warning for the coming days, predicting more heavy rains and strong winds across various parts of the country. Winds are expected to be particularly strong in the northern and central atolls over the next 24 hours, with the southern atolls likely to experience rough conditions starting this afternoon. Heavy rainfall is also anticipated in the southern regions, along with rough seas across the nation.
The intense rainfall has already led to flooding in 20 islands, with some homes sustaining damage. In Malé City alone, 231 homes were reported to have been flooded.
Given the severe weather conditions, the Met Office has advised residents and seafarers to exercise caution. The seas are expected to be especially rough, and those venturing out on the water are urged to prioritize safety measures.
