The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced its plans to launch a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Malé, marking a significant step toward sustainable transportation in the city.
The new charging station is currently being built on Dhonandharaadha Magu, close to STELCO’s headquarters, and is expected to be ready for public use soon.
Hussain Fahmy, the Managing Director of STELCO, highlighted the company’s dedication to advancing the government’s environmental goals. “The construction is underway, and the station will cater to both four-wheeled and two-wheeled electric vehicles,” Fahmy stated.
Fahmy explained that this project aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s environmental agenda, which seeks to lower carbon emissions and promote the adoption of electric vehicles across the Maldives.
He also noted that the Male’ City Council has expressed its full support for the initiative, ensuring that the project will proceed without any hitches.
The design of the charging station will be inspired by South Korea’s model, known for having the highest density of public EV charging stations, with one station available for every three cars.
This initiative was originally proposed by President Muizzu during his time as Mayor of Malé City, with the Transport Committee of the Male’ City Council conducting the necessary studies and planning to bring the project to fruition.
