The Maldives Immigration Department is actively investigating more than 490 cases submitted via Immigration Watch, a newly launched platform aimed at addressing illegal immigration. Immigration Watch, introduced on July 17, 2024, is an online portal that allows citizens to report issues related to illegal immigrants and foreign workers. According to Immigration officials, the platform has become one of the most effective tools in monitoring and addressing foreign-related concerns.
Since its launch, 626 cases have been reported, with 496 of these currently under investigation. Additionally, Immigration officials confirmed that 105 cases are in the process of verification.
Raids and Enforcement Actions
One of the key actions taken through the platform has been the execution of raids on suspected illegal residences. Immigration officers have raided 266 locations where foreigners were allegedly living or conducting businesses without proper documentation. These targeted efforts aim to curb illegal activities and ensure compliance with the country’s immigration laws.
The Immigration Department has already deported 3,542 illegal immigrants this year. Many of those deported had been residing in the Maldives without valid documents, while others were found operating businesses without proper authorization.
Broader Scope of Immigration Watch
Beyond addressing the issue of illegal immigrants, Immigration Watch also plays a crucial role in tracking foreigners attempting to smuggle into the Maldives. The platform offers a 24-hour anonymous reporting system, allowing individuals to submit information, including photos, directly to authorities.
Future Plans
The government has ambitious plans to expand its efforts to combat illegal immigration. These plans include developing a comprehensive database of all foreigners living in the Maldives. The goal is to streamline the immigration system and provide a long-term solution to the challenges posed by unregulated foreign labor and illegal residency. The government aims to have this system fully implemented within three years.
