President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu departed for New York last night to participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79). Accompanied by a high-level Maldivian delegation, the President is set to take on a leadership role throughout the proceedings.
During his trip, President Muizzu is scheduled to deliver a key address to the General Assembly on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. He will also take part in the “Summit of the Future,” co-chair interactive dialogues, and speak at multiple side events. The President will engage in various bilateral and multilateral discussions with state and government leaders to bolster international cooperation.
Speaking to reporters at the airport before departing, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of maintaining strong global relationships and the role of the Maldives at the United Nations. He highlighted his intent to focus on issues vital to the country’s progress, particularly in the areas of environmental preservation, technological advancements, and development. He expressed hope that these international discussions would yield support for the Maldives’ continued growth.
This visit is notable as it marks President Muizzu’s first appearance at the UN General Assembly. It also coincides with the 59th anniversary of the Maldives joining the United Nations, further highlighting the country’s long-standing commitment to international diplomacy. Additionally, President Muizzu will make history by being the first Maldivian leader to take part in a debate at the UN Security Council.
The President is expected to conclude his official visit and return to Malé on Sunday, September 29, 2024.
