President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially declared Sunday, November 10, 2024, as a public holiday, aligning it with the Republic Day celebrations on the following day. The announcement was made through a directive from the President’s Office, granting citizens an extended break to mark this significant occasion.
Republic Day, celebrated annually on November 11, commemorates the establishment of the second republic in 1968, a pivotal moment in Maldivian history. By declaring November 10 a holiday, the government aims to promote national unity and provide uninterrupted time for citizens to partake in festivities.
As per the 2024 calendar, Sunday, November 10 was originally scheduled as a regular working day. The President’s Office stated that this decision ensures a seamless transition between the weekend and the national holiday, allowing for continuous celebrations.
This is not the first time the government has declared additional holidays for smoother observance of key national events. Similar moves have been made in the past to prevent interruptions between holidays, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere for citizens across the nation.
