Progressive Party of Maldives Votes to Dissolve

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) is set to dissolve following a unanimous decision by its Senate. The resolution was passed during a specially convened Senate meeting, marking a significant moment for the political landscape in the Maldives.

According to a statement, the move comes as PPM and the People’s National Congress (PNC), the current ruling party, share a unified ideology and operate as a coalition. Party leaders believe maintaining two separate entities is unnecessary, given the large number of members aligning with the PNC.

The resolution to dissolve PPM, which was signed by its three vice-presidents and the secretary general, was supported by all 42 Senate members present.

Founded in 2011 by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, PPM has played a pivotal role in Maldivian politics. However, its leadership now sees this dissolution as a step toward consolidating political efforts under the PNC banner.
