Residents of Malé are preparing for another round of heavy rains as storm clouds gathered over the capital on Monday, just two weeks after widespread flooding damaged several homes.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) issued a warning that weather conditions are expected to worsen after sunset. The cyclone, forming in the southwest of the Bay of Bengal, is moving westward toward the Maldives, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall from late Monday through Tuesday morning.
In addition to heavy rains, the MET Office has forecasted strong winds and rough seas, with the bad weather expected to persist until Wednesday.
In response to the warning, the Malé City Council has begun placing sandbags around homes identified as particularly vulnerable to flooding. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reinforced 56 homes as part of its flood prevention measures.
The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has also been deployed to support flood prevention efforts, concentrating operations in flood-prone areas on the western side of the capital. The MNDF’s teams have been stationed with water pumps to drain potential floodwaters and mitigate damage.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel during the rain, and follow safety guidelines to protect their homes and businesses. The MET Office continues to monitor the situation closely and has advised the public to take necessary precautions as the storm approaches.
