Propeller Guards to Become Mandatory for Whale Shark-Watching Boats

Boats used for whale shark-watching tours in the Maldives will soon be required to install propeller guards, Environment Minister Toriq Ibrahim announced on Saturday. The regulation, aimed at enhancing safety for both marine life and swimmers, is set to take effect in three months.

The decision follows two tragic fatalities during whale shark-watching tours, prompting the government to take immediate action. Speaking to the Public Service Media (PSM), Minister Toriq stated that the new regulation would be finalized and publicized within a week.

“Boats will be required to install propeller guards if they come within 250 meters of a whale shark. Entry into such areas without a propeller guard will not be allowed. This measure will be implemented in three months,” Toriq said.

The minister emphasized that propeller guards would protect not only whale sharks but also other marine species, swimmers, and divers. Additionally, all whale shark-watching boats will need to register with authorities, and tour guides will be mandated to undergo training to ensure proper conduct during excursions.

New guidelines will also limit the number of tourists to five per guide to reduce overcrowding and ensure safety. The Environment Ministry plans to deploy boats to monitor compliance at popular whale shark points.

Toriq warned that boats failing to comply with the new regulations would face penalties, underscoring the government’s commitment to safeguarding the environment and enhancing the safety of marine tourism activities.

The government is also renewing its efforts to manage the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPa), the largest marine sanctuary in the Maldives, located in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. SAMPa is renowned for its year-round whale shark sightings, making it a key site for marine tourism.

The new measures mark a significant step toward balancing tourism activities with marine conservation in one of the country’s most iconic natural attractions.
