RTL Ferry Services to Commence in R. Atoll by June, B. Atoll by July, Says President

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to begin Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry services in Raa Atoll by the end of June and in Baa Atoll before the end of July 2025. The President made the pledge while speaking to residents of Ungoofaaru Island, emphasizing the critical role of efficient transportation in fostering development across North Maalhosmadulu (Raa) Atoll.

During his address, President Muizzu reiterated his administration’s focus on transforming Ungoofaaru into a key Urban Centre—a goal integrated into the nation’s mid-to-long-term development strategies under the National Development Master Plan. As part of this plan, he assured residents of swift completion of the island’s land reclamation project once weather conditions permit, alongside a new 500-unit housing project. He added that education would be a top priority, with upcoming infrastructure aimed at transitioning Ungoofaaru School to a single-session system. Furthermore, the President confirmed that Ungoofaaru Island Hospital would be upgraded to a tertiary-level facility over the next three years.

President Muizzu also highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to extend crucial services to other islands in Raa Atoll. Though not included in his current itinerary, he revealed that a branch of the Bank of Maldives (BML) would soon open in Dhuvaafaru—expected to be operational by this June.

Underscoring broader national challenges, President Muizzu reiterated his vision to eliminate corruption through technological means, referencing insights gained from his recent trip to Estonia. He said the government’s plan to digitize all public services under a single-window system would streamline processes and curb bribery, as the system would reduce direct human interaction.

Addressing concerns about recent legal amendments on the use, consumption, and sale of tobacco products, President Muizzu clarified that the changes aim to discourage unhealthy habits through practical, preventive measures—rather than offering undue advantages to any party. He urged the island community to unite in efforts to eradicate tobacco use entirely.

A high-level delegation of Cabinet Ministers is accompanying the President on this tour to meet directly with local councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), and institutional heads. These meetings will focus on identifying and advancing key developmental priorities for Raa Atoll.
